Energy metering

NEED: Otago Polytechnic could not undertake detailed monitoring of energy use, nor identify where energy was being wasted, with only one energy meter for five buildings.

CAPABILITIES: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY USE, DESIGN-LED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, SHORT-RUN PRODUCTION, PRODUCT TESTING, APP-BASED DEVELOPMENT

SOLUTION: We designed and manufactured new energy meters that measure power use of specific sources, such as hot water, lifts, ventilation, plugs, lights, equipment and services, so each area can be monitored and assessed. The meters are connected by wifi to the building management system.

IMPACT: More than 100 of these meters have been installed. Using this information Otago Polytechnic is saving on its electricity bill. We can also use these meters to carry out energy audits for other organisations.
