The Polytechnic was really practical which suited me more. The lecturers were really helpful and showed us how our learning could be applied to the outside world.

Otago Polytechnic graduate, Jacob Ong, was selected out of 460 applicants to participate in the new GovTech Talent Graduate Programme.  The cross-agency pilot scheme aims to build the Government’s information, technology and digital talent pipeline.

“It was really cool when I found out I was successful.  Most jobs only have a few spaces, but fifteen graduates were chosen for this programme, so we were all really pleased.”

Jacob started his studying accounting at Otago University, but cross credited his papers to Otago Polytechnic.

“Polytech was really practical which suited me more.  The lecturers were really helpful and showed us how our learning could be applied I the outside world.”

Jacob found the GovTech programme advertised online, and decided to give it a go.  Recruitment used an innovative digital campaign and students participated in several stages of selection, including an online game, to identify key behavioural traits such as motivation, persistence and risk propensity.

“The best thing about this opportunity is the variety - we work in three different government agencies for eight months each.  So, we get to experience how the different departments work, contribute our expertise and be part of digital transformation across the public sector.”

Jacob reckons he’s landed the perfect job to kick-start his career in the public sector.
