Taught by some of the most qualified instructors in New Zealand, our programmes have a strong focus on practical learning, self-evaluation, goal setting and industry experience. Improve your ability to gain employment in a range of guiding/instructing positions, both nationally and internationally – or go on to further study.

Please note: As long as you meet the specific entry requirements for that programme, you can enter all programmes directly, without having to follow a pathway. Successful completion of one programme does not necessarily guarantee you entry to a higher level qualification. Please check all entry requirements carefully on the programme information sheet.

  New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Multi-skilled) (Level 4)*

Replacing our Certificate in Outdoor Pursuits (Level 4) from 2019, this redesigned and redeveloped qualification will give you the core skills and knowledge you need to work in the Outdoor and Adventure Education industry. Graduates may be eligible to apply for full registration on the New Zealand Register of Recreation Professionals (NZRRP). Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for entry into the New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Multi-skilled) (Level 5)* to further your studies.

Career outcomes

Paid or volunteer roles as a trainee instructor, leader or guide within community and private outdoor or adventure education/recreation/tourism providers. 

  New Zealand Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Level 5)*

This programme is replacing our Diploma in Outdoor Leadership and Management. Offered for the first time in 2020, embark on this action-packed programme to strengthen and develop your skills to safely instruct or guide a range of outdoor activities. Graduates will be eligible to apply for full registration on the New Zealand Register of Recreation Professionals (NZRRP). Progress into our Bachelor of Applied Science to broaden your learning and employment opportunities.

Career outcomes

  • Role as an instructor or guide within the community and private outdoor or adventure education/recreation/tourism providers, schools, leadership development programmes or self-employment

 

  New Zealand Certificate in Introductory Snowschool Instruction (Applied) (Level 4) (Ski) or (Snowboard)

Practice your skiing and snowboarding skills in the heart of the Southern Alps and gain an entry level professional snowsport teaching qualification, while actually working in a snowschool environment.

Career outcomes

  • Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work teaching or assisting beginner skiers, telemark skiers or snowboarders within a snowschool environment as an entry level instructor or teaching assistant.
  • Graduates of this qualification can also work in a variety of roles across departments within an alpine resort such as: lift operations; snow-grooming and snowmaking; snowsport equipment and guest activities.

 

  New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 5)

Study professional avalanche risk management with the most experienced provider of avalanche education in New Zealand, in the heart of the Southern Alps.

Career outcomes

Graduates may be employed or work as volunteers under (direct or indirect) supervision, in a range of operations actively assisting in the management of avalanche hazard and risk including: ski areas, heli-ski operations, cat-skiing operations, snow-mobile operations, road contractors, alpine and other outdoor guiding and instruction operations, hunting, trekking, Department of Conservation, alpine search and rescue, and education providers.

  New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 6)*

This programme is replacing the Diploma in Avalanche Studies from 2019.  

Providing the highest level of professional training available in New Zealand, enjoy the chance to be taught by pros and graduate with the ability to assume supervisory roles in all sectors of the industry.

As the Snowsport tourism industry grows and the emphasis on safe participation increases, there is a steady demand for qualified snow safety personnel around the world. Your expertise could lead to exciting employment opportunities in tourism ventures, numerous ski-field roles, guiding or roading operations.

  Diploma in Avalanche Studies

This programme is being replaced from 2019 by the New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 6)* (*subject to final approval).
