I’m doing all this for the kids -- to prove that you can do anything if you put your mind to it

Renee Brown knows a fair bit about juggling figures - be they big numbers or small boys.

Exams might be looming for the first-year Bachelor of Applied Management (Accounting) student, yet she is no stranger to challenges.

The 24-year-old mother-of-two completed a New Zealand Diploma in Business last year, having successfully tackled Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates in Business (Administration and Technology).

She decided to enrol in the Level 3 certificate when she found out she was pregnant with her first child.

“I was due to give birth to my son in the mid-year break and I was unsure about carrying on, because my family were saying how difficult it is with a new-born,” Renee recalls.

“But I thought I could do it, so I enrolled in the Level 4 Certificate when my first child was three weeks old. I brought him to class until he was six weeks old and then put him into the day-care centre across the road (Polykids).”

Renee and her husband had another baby this year. In fact, she brought him to class when he was a week old.

“I had him in his pram and would pop out of class to feed him. The other students didn’t mind. In fact, they keep asking when he’s coming back.

“I’m doing all this for the kids -- to prove that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”
